MATHS LESSON DROP INS - NOVEMBER 2018
Thanks to the 78 parents that attended the drop ins over the two days. 18 people also filled out an online questionnaire about the event.
95% of parents and carers found the sessions useful.
100% of parents and carers say they would attend a similar session in future.
What did you enjoy?
- I have a better understanding of how maths is taught in school and how to assist at home. It's good to know what stages my child should be at in each year too. It gives us a desired target to aim for and to know what to concentrate on whilst doing maths at home.
- How they learn and how I was able to see how they are taught so that I can continue it at home.
- The fun the children were having.
- It was nice to go into class and sit in on a lesson with the whole year group to see what they were learning, and how the teaching in the class was done.
- I find that the session is informative about what my child is doing. Also it's helpful for me to help my child at home.
- Great to see my child in the learning environment that she emulates daily, in her play. The way she practices at home is the way she is taught. Good to see it first-hand. I liked the group learning on the carpet and the assigned tasks afterwards per table.
- Learning to problem solve.
- Seeing how the children are taught, seeing them interact with each other and the energy in the classroom.
- Like seeing how the children get to do their learning in different ways. It's more fun than when I was in school.
- Watching children work together in pairs to work out the answers and helping each other.
- To see how your child’s works in class.
- Interacting with my child in the classroom whilst observing a lesson.
- Relaxed. Happy atmosphere. Class keen to participate.
- Seeing how they work through questions. Was nice simply being an observer and seeing what they do on a daily basis.
- The clarity and explanation of the exercises presented by the teacher were excellent.
- Being able to sit in on the lesson. A privilege.
- I enjoyed then sitting with my child, and the rest on the children on his table to answer some maths questions together.
- Keep up the good work
Any other comments?
- Please remember to send home tests so that we can work on areas that need attention.
- We will continue to send tests homes so that you are able to support your child with their learning.
- I found this session particularly helpful as it gave me a better understanding of how mathematics is delivered to my child.
- So pleased our children have the opportunity to be Parkfielders. You're all doing a great job, thank you!
- I'd like to highly commend Mr Barnes on his professional and totally in tune teaching approach! Very impressed!
- Miss Cummins is a brilliant teacher and is so good with helping the children understand what they are learning
PARENTS VIEWS – AUTUMN 2018
Thanks to the 122 parents and carers that completed questionnaires. We appreciate your feedback. Please see below for a summary of responses.
How well do you feel your child has settled into their new class?
89% of parents felt their child had settled into their class. The remaining 11% of parents gave a neutral score.
We are continually trying to improve how we communicate with parents through the use of the newsletter, email, twitter, texts and the website. How do you think we are doing?
92% felt that we were doing well with communication, 7% were neutral and 2% felt that it could improve.
If any, can you think of further ways to improve communication?
More notice of events please
We will do our very best to send text and e-mail reminders out for events that are planned. Although some events are unplanned, the vast majority are on our online calendar found on the school website. These events are planned in for the whole year well in advance.
Class teacher email correspondence
We have found that the best way to communicate with the class teacher is through the school office. Most teachers teach throughout the day and may not get the opportunity to respond to an email. A message through the office allows us to deal with important matters immediately.
Contact both parents
Messages automatically get sent to the prime contact on our mailing system. If you’d like both parents to receive a message please speak to the office.
More text messages or letters rather than email
We understand that text messages are quicker received than an email. Unfortunately, there is a small cost to school for sending text messages but emails are free for the school to send. In terms of letters, there is a cost and admin time involved and we have found previously that letters don’t make it home and can be found weeks later in the bottom of a school bag!
None it is already perfect and I can see what my child's class is doing😅
How would you rate the school website?
95% of parents found the website to be excellent or good with 5% of parents neutral.
This is the first year we have had to charge for extra-curricular clubs. They cost £1 per session. Do you think this is:
92% of parents said that the price was either just right or too little with 8% saying the cost was too expensive.
We are into our third year of a contract with our school meals provider. Have you any comments about how they're going?
The vast majority of comments were positive and included comments about portion sizes, choices available, special themed days and that many children enjoy them.
Other comments included:
My child seems to eat the same thing every day and I think deserts are too frequent and should be a treat on a Friday - maybe fruit and yoghurt on the other.
Thanks for those comments. Staff do encourage all children to try something different everyday as the menu changes on a daily basis. However, we appreciate that some children are fussy eaters and we’d rather them eat something they like for dinner rather than make them eat something they don’t like. There are usually about 5 desserts on offer for children each day and these do include a healthier fruit/yoghurt option.
The Early Birds before school club started in September. Do you have any comments about how it's going?
All parents had positive comments - these will be passed onto the staff. Thanks. They included:
Great, amazing! My daughter has settled in well and enjoys going to breakfast club. Glad about the early 7.30 drop off . Daughter loves it. Brilliant. My daughter enjoys coming in early and says she has fun. Outstanding provision from a highly motivated team of professionals. Staff are brilliant and so friendly. Great service.
The Busy Bees after school club also started in September. Do you have any comments about how it’s going?
Again, we received some incredibly positive comments – thanks.
Amazing! Mrs Naughton is a star. Fantastic, great asset to the school. My son has really enjoyed attending and settled really well. Brilliant and loves the new room and structure. Amazing team
Would you be interested in supporting the PTFA?
Thanks to the 18 people that said they would be interested. Please keep an eye on your emails for an invite to the next PTA meeting.

How can we make Parkfield Primary School even better?
Responses included:
Hold summer school holiday clubs
Less pressure regarding SATS. Some children can sense pressure.
More information about how our children are doing.
The gateway: would like to see single payments being able to be added: for example if it’s a bank holiday and school meals need to be paid for 4 days that week... can only at present pay for 5 days .
Involve the community more. Make people feel like they are part of a large family.
Extra lessons after school eg help with maths
Communication daily from teacher if necessary would be helpful.
More photographs of the children on the website.
Could playground supervision be improved?
More sport and drama
Thanks for the responses. Some of these comments include things we can act upon as a school and hopefully those people that have commented may see slight changes in future. Some things we unfortunately can’t act upon due to budgeting issues. If you have a particular question, query or complaint please contact the school office and a member of the leadership team will be happy to speak to you.
END OF YEAR REPORTS - JULY 2018
Thanks to the parents that sent in a response after receiving your child's report. These are some of the comments about the reports:
- My favorite bit, was the teachers personal comments, much better than ticked & highlighted boxes.
- Very happy with my son's report. Another great year at Parkfield!
- My child's report was a pleasure to read and a lovely keepsake to remember her time in year 2.
- I was quite moved by my child's report. It was a totally honest and respectful account and showed that you do see my child's qualities and abilities.
- My child's report was lovely to read, it’s reassuring to know she’s on the right track for year 6.
- A delight to read and very accurate regarding the emotional development of my child.
- I am happy with the report except I would like to know the percentage of the target my child has achieved in each subject. There are a lot of highlights on the sheets and ticks so in many cases I cannot identify clearly in each target to what extent he has achieved it. Please could there be a tick box next to or underneath each one.
- I like the layout of the report, but the target sheets fill me with dread. Could you please put clear defined tick boxes underneath or next to each item. This would allow for an easier understanding of attainment. I like the highlighter system, but it would work better if wasn’t mixed up with the ticks.
- After years of tweaking our system we find the current way is easiest for teachers and pupils to understand. We don't include tick boxes anymore because we know a child can, at times, confidently complete a particular target and teachers can highlight immediately to say it's achieved rather than having to add ticks to the sheet. The different colours used to highlight help us easily identify the progress each child is making across each term.
- I would liked the report to include information regarding the Y2 SATS and my child's results.
- You are more than welcome to come into school and find the results out from the class teacher.
- It would be nice towards the end of their time in school to have an end of year parents evening rather than a start of year meet the teacher. To discuss...the half hour window after reports are sent out for all parents doesn't seem enough.
- The focus of our Parents' Evenings are about highlighting areas of strength and areas to develop and working together to achieve the best for each child. After reports are sent out we give parents and carers an opportunity to discuss reports. However, if you'd like to discuss anything else please feel free to contact the office and arrange a meeting with the class teacher.
- Will the areas highlighted for improvement be a starting point for year 3?
- Absolutely! Targets are passed onto your child's next teacher and are used to identify groups of children and individuals that may require additional support or intervention during the Autumn term.
ENGLISH LESSON DROP INS - APRIL 2018
Thanks to the 64 parents and carers that attended over the two days.
18 parents completed the online questionnaire.
94% of parents said they found the session useful and 100% said they would attend a similar session in future.
Thanks for the comments, these are some of the comments about what you said you enjoyed about the session:
- It’s great to see how our children are taught.
- I liked how the children used a short story to create sentences and vocabulary.
- Learning how they teach to write sentences. Using different kinds of sentences.
- The level of knowledge the children know.
- The different learning styles incorporated. E.g large group listening time, smaller group independent work, different resources the children accessed.
- Interaction with my child in the class environment.
WHOLE SCHOOL HISTORY MUSEUM - MARCH 2018
We asked all the parents who visited our whole school history museum what they liked about it:
READING DROP INS – FEBRUARY 2018 - Parent feedback
A total of 54 parents came to the drops ins – thank you. Thanks also to the 34 parents that completed an online questionnaire.
100% of parents felt the session was either very useful or incredibly useful.
100% of parents would attend a similar session in future.
What did you like about the session?
- Useful and informative
- I found the way the teacher taught guided reading was fantastic.
- It was great to see Shay in a lesson he enjoyed
- How you can see the progress your child makes and how much they contribute.
- Today I really got to see Parkfield’s teaching strategies in action, the children worked fantastically together, they showed how grown up and independent they can be. We will definitely be using this technique at home.
- Very well prepared and structured
- Really informative and provides me with additional skills to assist my child at home.
- A chance to see how the children are taught & what is expected of them.
- Just seeing how all the children read together and having their discussions about the book and it will help at home with reading.
- Seeing how the children are taught surrounded by friends/groups asking questions about the story.
- I found the whole session good. The way the teachers use the book to get the children thinking and interacting instead of simply reading the story was great.
- Getting more understanding of how the structure works.
- I like the way the children discussed the book such as contexts and words.
Is there anything we could do to improve future lessons?
No one had any ideas and were happy with the current format and structure.
Do you have any further comments?
- I am very happy that comprehension is a priority and I like this system.
- Mrs Howarth was amazing with the group it’s so lovely to see.
- Thank you once again for providing parents with this fantastic opportunity.
- Well done to the teachers and staff
- Unfortunately due to work commitments it is difficult to always be available to attend these sessions , let alone try and fit 2 classes in 1 session. I'm not sure how this could be addressed in further drop ins, other than later sessions.
- We appreciate this is difficult and we changed the days this time to try and accommodate parent’s needs. Later sessions would be possible but this time we felt it would be more useful to see guided reading in action because it would be difficult to organise after school in terms of groups of children and staffing.
- I think this a far better way of teaching reading. I still would like more comprehension written sheets which are unseen by the pupils ,in readiness for the SATS. However I have noticed an impact on my sons reading at home in a positive manner.
- Children across the school complete a minimum of six formal tests per year so that they’re prepared for SATS style questions. In year 6, that increases due to the number of practice papers they complete in preparation for SATS. We also believe that the additional written work completed in the KS2 bug club books will have a positive impact on the children’s ability to answer SATS style questions.

How can we make Parkfield Primary School even better? (Selected questions)
- Places for reception children in before/after school club would be helpful
- We will be addressing this in September 2018. More info to follow.
- Better choice of meals
- We are constantly aiming to improve and enhance our meals and are always listening to suggestions from our pupils.
- More worksheets for Homework.
- We took the decision to use bugclub and Mathletics as these provide instant feedback to pupils, which is much more effective that waiting for a teacher to answer questions on a worksheet. We’ve also found that the number of children completing homework this way has increased compared to when we set worksheets as homework.
- more after school classes for reception.
- We will be hoping to improve on this in September 2018. More info to follow.
- More Frequent Trips
- There have been fewer trips this year due to funding cuts. We are no longer in financial position to subsidise trips and are conscious of passing on the cost to parents. We are limiting the number of trips at the moment because we’re aware that they can be expensive, in particular for families with more than one child at the school. In future we are planning for every class to go on at least one trip each term.
- Maybe if possible more advance notice of events and drop ins for parents
- Our drop in sessions are planned months in advance and are on the school calendar. However, we appreciate that we need to send out reminders by email and text for those that haven’t seen the calendar.
- I’m not sure exactly what I can be doing at home to help my child. We do reading, spellings, times tables and she goes on bug club and Mathletics on the website but I would like some more information on how to help her more at home.
- Please use the target sheets for reading, writing and maths to help with what’s expected in each year group. These give a great idea and examples of what’s expected. Other than that, please support with any homework set – including the learning logs. Whatever support you’re offering will be helping your child.
Any other comments?
- well done all staff at Parkfield, keep up the good work!!
- Very good school, if my child is happy we parents are happy.
- Parkfield school is outstanding it's a fun safe place for my child and I am really happy at the improvements that have been made since September 2017

- I could see it wasn't staged the children were natural and so was the teacher
- Learning with my child.
- I liked the differentiation, the fact that it was recognised that some children needed to learn differently to the main group. I liked that there were more visual aids to help them to understand.
- That I could see how my son is learning maths which will now allow me to help him in the same way at home
- Lovely to see how well they are doing. How they work out the work. I learned a lot

Is there anything we could do to improve future sessions?
- No (3)
- More of the same please! It was fantastic.
- They are great as they are!
Do you have any further comments or questions?
- Thank you very much for providing opportunities like this, it is much appreciated.
- I appreciate the curriculum has changed however as a school Parkfield have always been successful at maths. Why change the method when it was working? Especially when it seems to be less information and more guess work. Can we not use more exam questions as examples in class? After all whether its Sats or GCSEs that is what our children will have to aim for.
- We have been successful in the past but there are areas of the curriculum that we needed to develop. Reasoning and problem solving were areas that needed a 'tweak'. Fortunately, the new style SATS and GCSE tests have a larger focus on these areas and as a result we feel we're preparing our children even better than before to tackle these tests. In terms of guess work, it's important that children develop their reasoning skills to further understand and develop their mathematical abilities so they can be applied across a range of contexts. We are constantly using test style questions (e.g. from SATS) in lessons to support, consolidate and assess children's understanding across all year groups.
- Thank you once again.
- We continued our tens and ones learning at home on mathletics, this is a valuable approach to continue learning at home. It provides a great home to school link. Special mention to Mrs Mullane for providing the support needed for a group of children. She did an amazing job helping them to understand the task.
- Enjoyed the classes
PARENT QUESTIONNAIRE – AUTUMN 2017
Thanks to the 131 parents that responded.
96% of parents felt that their child had settled well into their new class.
89% of parents feel that we are doing well with communication through email, twitter, texts and the website. When asked about how we could further improve communication, some of the replies included:
- Ensure communications have correct details before sending.
- Message the school gateway app the night before for reminder rather than the morning.
- More communication through tapestry.
- Bit more notice for matches away such as netball etc when working
- Be able to have more than one parent on the email system
- Possibly earlier communication where possible
- use just one media rather than 3 or 4
- Further notice when things are required
- Texts for important dates coming up or if children need to bring something in reminders for a couple of days before. Not just on the day.
We will endeavor to send messages out as soon as possible and ensure they’re checked so that they include the correct information. We have also increased the number of newsletters being emailed out and made sure they give advanced warning of events. Our school online calendar is constantly updated and we will ensure that events and details are placed on here; giving as much notice as possible.
96% of parents felt that the school website was excellent. When asked about how we could improve the website, some of the following suggestions were made:
- Have a smart phone friendly website.
- Make the links more visible.
- Link all photos from twitter to each year group.
- Parents used to be able to comment on photos etc, now you have to have Twitter. Personally preferred the site.
- Stop doing everything through twitter.
- I think the tweets on the website can make it confusing.
Having a smart phone friendly website is something we have researched. However, because of the time and money we would have to spend it was decided to continue with the current site.
We decided to embed Twitter on our website as it was a free tool that helps all members of staff communicate quickly and easily with parents. As a school, you’ll notice that we use a number of different hashtags (#). These allow us to filter information on the website and place school ‘tweets’ in the correct location on the site. For example, #Y4 ensures the relevant tweets are sent to the Year 4 section of the website. We appreciate that comments are more difficult to add to particular tweets if you’re not a twitter user. However, the comments section at the bottom of many pages of the website is available to use if you wish to make a comment.
When asked about school meals, some of the comments included:
- Fantastic
- 'The curries are great'
- They are tasty
- My son loves all his lunches especially the salad bar area and puddings
- My daughter really enjoys these meals, especially the pizza
- My child loves the food and I think there is amazing choice
- James enjoys them, but with having a choice each day he often eats pasta everyday rather than trying new things
- Portions are small.
- My child still regularly asks to go on packed lunch; he seems to have pasta a lot!
- Not enough food of each choice. I keep hearing how they didn’t have left what they wanted as it was all gone.
The vast majority of comments were positive and all comments will be passed to P&A that run the kitchen. We have made many positive changes to school meals over the past year and will continue to do so.
When asked about what you most like about Parkfield, some of the comments included:
- My daughter is happy and enjoys coming to school and is doing well.

- More praise and reward for children that work hard.
- We offer a range of rewards for all children across the school. These include: house points, certificates (sports, computing, hand writing), stickers, weekly merit award, prize draw each half term, whole class rewards, top table and trophies. We are always looking for other ways to praise and reward hard work. One initiative we added this September was the ‘Parkfield Positive Postcard’. This can be sent out by any member of staff and so far they have been a huge success. We hope that over the year this ensures that all children are recognised for their achievements.
- Better feedback on how my daughter is doing regarding targets required and levels
- Annotated target cards are sent out at the end of each term which detail the expectations for your child’s year group. These targets for reading, writing and maths are also available in the personal organisers. However, if you’d like an up to date copy please speak to the class teacher who would be happy to help.
- Make use of Sunnybrow’s forest school
- We’d love to make more use of this fabulous resource. However, it does cost us to use it so we have to limit the number of times we access it.
- Possibly some more after school sporting activities for younger ones. My son is very keen to get into running, athletics and cross country.
- We appreciate that the younger children aren’t offered as many clubs as the older children. This is something that we’d like to improve but we are limited due to staffing, space and cost. However, what the younger children can access every dinner time is sports provision provided by our highly trained Year 6 ‘Sports Leaders’ who are supported by our Sports coach, Mr Spencer.
- A lot of the parent drop-ins are either 9am or 5pm which for parents working 9-5 makes it difficult to attend. If it isn’t possible to make them later maybe online tutorials?
- Great idea. Although this could be time consuming, we’ll see what we can do! Having some of our pupils explaining their learning on a short video clip is something we could experiment with.

Some of the comments about what was liked about the session included: clear presentation, clear explanations, lots of enthusiasm around the changes, being able to talk to the teachers that are implementing the changes, liking the increased amount of reading opportunities, opportunity to ask questions, handouts and refreshments!
To improve the presentation in future some parents commented that: abbreviations to be explained, leave questions until the end and a later start time than 5pm. Thanks for these comments. We will in future ensure that abbreviations are explained as we use them all the time and assume others understand. I will also leave questions until the end to ensure that the presentation is completed in a timely manner. In respect to the later finish time, we will always try to accommodate parents that work late but this does depend on school staff being available.
Questions asked included:
Will the new curriculum approach accommodate children who require maths 1-1 intervention? Our approach to maths intervention has been incredibly successful over the past few years. We are still continuing with this element of intervention and actually improving it as teachers will now deliver intervention sessions in addition to a teaching assistant. At times, teachers will pre-select children that require additional support depending on the needs of the child. There is also daily lesson intervention in place that ensures those that struggle with a particular task during a lesson are immediately supported.
ENGLISH LESSON DROP INS (Y1 – 5 only) - MAY 2017

- Alternate the days which they are held on I had to take time Off work which was difficult as I only work part time but they always seem to be on Fridays and I work the back end of the week I know not everyone Can be catered for but alternating the days would help!

- Session was relaxed and fun.
- It shows parents the techniques used so we can work together at home and school more efficiently with my child.

- Not all parents can make the sessions due to other commitments, would a later or afters school session be considered for those that work?
- This is something we are aware of as a school and we have held after school sessions previously - particularly for Maths. We will look at how to incorporate this in future for English lessons. 97% of parents felt their child had settled in well.
What do you like most about Parkfield Primary School?
All the comments have been placed on a ‘wordle’ to give an insight to the overall comments that have been made.
15 parents said they’d be interested in joining the PTFA.
- Miss Steele will contact these parents when we have our next mneeting. Thanks for your support.
93% of parents say we’re doing well with communication, such as: email, twitter, texts and the website.
If any, can you think of further ways to improve communication?
- more text messages instead of emails
- keep website updated as previously, with photos etc
- send communication in all forms ie txt/mail etc
- More parental consultation, e.g. changes to uniform - parent opinions are important too!
- Maybe you could give children links with websites
- Links and resources to support with each learning log homework task are shared on the school website every term
- We are using 'Showbie' this year which children can access from home and has lots of educational links.
- Text updates about upcoming events.
- Please more comments in reading records suggesting areas for improvement especially after reading comprehension. Even if it is written by the students in the book. We as parents can help.
-
- Thanks for these comments. These are things that we will continue to work on over the next year.
This year, we've changed our school dinner providers. Have you any comments about how they're going?
96% of parent’s commented that they were happy with the changes.
- If you are unhappy with any aspect of school dinners, please contact the school office.
The school uniform changed this year. Have you any comments about the change?
The vast majority of parents were happy with the uniform change and felt the children looked smarted with shirts and ties. However, a large number of people commented on the quality of jumpers from our provider.
- We are going to review at the end of the Autumn term our uniform policy and will look at alternative providers. We are already working in partnership with ‘Broadbents’ in Middleton who have agreed to stock our uniform. They’re also stocking Velcro ties, which some parents requested.
A few parents commented on the safety of wearing ties.
- This is an area that we will monitor but so far there have been no tie related injuries in school.
How can we make Parkfield Primary School even better?
There were a few things mentioned from parents including:
- More class assemblies
- Although we enjoy class assemblies and sharing them with friends and families, we have found that they do take a considerable amount of planning, preparation and practice time. This can impact on curriculum time and as a result we’ll to continue for now with one assembly per year.
- Every class also contributes to an Easter service, KS1 do a nativity and KS2 contribute to a Christmas church service.
- Parents are invited to the learning log celebration events showing off children's work.
- More choice for after school clubs
- We feel we offer a large number of clubs for the size of the school and we do have an uptake of over 180 places per week in the different clubs. With our new sports teacher, we will continue to provide numerous activities free of charge. Over the year we are hoping to offer all pupils across the school a variety of activities that they can enjoy.
- More PTFA events (Halloween/disco…etc)
- We will pass this request onto the PTFA. The school would fully support any additional fundraising events.
- Ensuring all pupils are included in photos on the school website
- We hope that with the increased use of ‘Twitter’ across the school we will have more photographs of all children included on the website.
- We're hoping to integrate Twitter more onto the school website next half-term using direct links to hashtag searches.
Any other comments? (Selected)
- Happy with how she has settled into school this year, no complaints at all
- My son is happy and thriving
- Thank you for all you have done.
- It'll be sad to say goodbye at the end of the year.
- I am very impressed with the after schools clubs this year, they are constructive and well thought out. Finally it is wonderful to see and hear my daughter go to school so enthusiastic about what she is going to learn.
