Children in Reception and Key Stage One follow the DfES Letters and Sounds program. This is a daily approach to teaching phonics in which individual letters and sounds are blended to form words.
We use a combination of reading schemes. These include the Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Star andProject X books. All the literature sent home is colour-banded in accordance with the particular level at which the children are working. The levels progress as follows: Pink, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange, Turquoise, Purple, Gold, White, Lime, Grey, Blue, Dark Red.
These books offer an expansive range of fiction and non-fiction texts in order that the breadth of children’s reading may be developed further. Children learn to read at different rates. Once they finish the reading scheme we encourage them to become independent readers and choose their own books from classroom and school libraries.
At Parkfield, we want all of our children to become competent and confident readers. As part of school policy, we ask that you read with your children for at least 10 minutes per night. This small amount of time can have a big impact on your child’s learning. Thank you for your support in such an important matter.
